The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

  • Action RPG
  • Single player
  • Xbox One and Windows PC

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt picked up Game of the Year awards from various outlets in 2015, and for good reason. The Witcher 3 follows Geralt of Rivia on a quest to find his adopted daughter, Ciri before the nefarious Wild Hunt captures her.

At its core, The Witcher 3 is an open-world action RPG with bold storytelling crammed with memorable characters, cutting-edge visuals and brutally responsive combat. The game takes place across dozens of hours and recently got bolstered with a lengthy story DLC as part of its season pass. Fans of open-world adventure games shouldn't overlook this title.

Wolfenstein: The New Order

  • First person shooter
  • Single player
  • Xbox One and Windows PC

Wolfenstein: The New Order reboots the legendary franchise that served to popularise first person shooters back in the early 90s.

Wolfenstein follows the exploits of B.J. Blazkowicz as he attempts to undermine the Nazi regime. The New Order takes place in an alternate 1960s reality, where a technologically advanced Third Reich managed to win World War 2 and take over the world.

Wolfenstein: The New Order won praise for its lengthy campaign, great writing and crisp combat. It examined B.J.'s character in more detail, adding an extra dimension to a character typically known only for blasting Nazis into meaty chunks. Fans of first person shooters need to play this game.

Grand Theft Auto V

Games like this need little introduction, as the series is now a firm staple in modern pop culture. Grand Theft Auto V took the open-world crime simulator to all new heights (literally), featuring an impossibly large map, ambitious campaign and a vibrant multiplayer mode.

In GTAV, you'll guide three protagonists from wildly different backgrounds through the Los Santos underworld. You can switch between the playable characters asynchronously while experiencing GTAV's signature satirical take on contemporary America.

Divinity: Original Sin

  • Strategic RPG
  • Single player with online and local 2-player co-op
  • Xbox One and Windows PC

Divinity: Original Sin launched for PC following a successful Kickstarter, and has since gone on to win numerous PC Game of the Year awards.

In my review, I praised Divinity: Original Sin for bringing the qualities of 90s CRPGs into the modern era. Original Sin is a vibrant and light-hearted turn-based RPG with true choice and consequence. Unlike some other modern RPGs, Divinity: Original Sin grants you full control over how you'll tackle the game's subversive plot and features one of the best co-op experiences available on the Xbox One today. RPGs with this level of complexity rarely allow you to bring in a friend, whether it's via Xbox Live or in your living room, Divinity: Original Sin supports it.

If you're a fan of RPGs and co-op games, Divinity: Original Sin deserves your attention.

Fallout 4

  • RPG shooter
  • Single player

Fallout 4 was one of the biggest games to launch in 2015, shipping a whopping $750 million worth of copies to retailers for its launch.

Developed by Bethesda Softworks, renowned custodians of The Elder Scrolls series, Fallout 4 takes the post-apocalyptic RPG further into FPS territory. Fallout 4's shooting mechanics trounces the previous titles in the series, but you're still able to create a gritty fist fighter or stealthy knife-wielder should you choose to do so. If great combat wasn't enough, Fallout 4 allows you to built settlements Minecraft-style, even setting up electrical grids and farms to provide for desperate wasteland survivors.

If you're a fan of first and third person shooters with heavy side-order of RPG gameplay, Fallout 4 should be on your list.

Battlefield 4

  • First person shooter
  • Single player campaign, online multiplayer
  • Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Windows PC

Battlefield 4 launched early in the Xbox One's life cycle, marred with server problems and engine quirks that almost derailed one of the biggest launches of the year. Thankfully, DICE and EA worked tirelessly to repair the game, transforming it into one of the most engaging and populated multiplayer-focussed shooters on the market today.

Despite its age, Battlefield 4 still has little competition when it comes to epic, huge-scale military battles. BF4 really goes all in with its gameplay, featuring jets, tanks, helicopters, hundreds of weapons with thousands of unlockable attachment combinations.

Battlefield 4 isn't a casual shooter by any means, 64-player Conquest matches can last well over 30 minutes and often requires patience over twitch skills. Still, there's few multiplayer shooters that are as deep and rewarding as a result.
