With CES 2015 not officially kicking off until Monday, Mercedes took the stage to show off its latest prototype — the autonomous F 015 Luxury in Motion. The latest concept from the German automaker comes from years of work, but still has a long way to go before it's totally road-worthy.
Quality time and private space will be true luxury goods in the future
The futuristic vehicle sits passengers in a single cabin, decked out with technology everywhere you look. Windows act as screens that show off personal information, email, or any number of other items. Passengers — or "guests" — can control the F 015 from any seat thanks to a free-floating control unit. Key functions can even be controlled via eye-tracking, without ever having to touch a thing.
On the outside, a series of LED lights show off "facial expressions" of the vehicle. It lets outsiders know, "I can see you", even going so far as to project a crosswalk ahead so pedestrians know it's safe to walk.
While Mercedes is anxious to get vehicles like the F 015 Luxury in Motion on the road, they know that there are still many hurdles to cross before autonomous cars will be available to the masses. They've been implanting their vision for self-driving cars since the early 1990s, and won't be slowing down anytime soon.
