Montblanc's unveils a smart band for its mechanical watches

With smartwatches starting to creep into the domain of traditional watch manufacturers, it looks like some are eager to do what they can to keep up. Luxury watch manufacturer Montblanc has taken the wraps off of a € 250 strap for its watches that contains a screen capable of receiving notifications.

The strap is called the "e-Strap," and will be a part of Montblanc's upcoming Timewalker Urban Speed collection. A Blog To Watch recently shed some light on the construction of the strap:

The e-Strap features a high-end leather strap that has a carbon fiber texture to it that Montblanc calls "Extreme Montblanc Leather" and is produced by them in Florence, Italy. At the bottom, sitting under your wrist is an electronic module made from DLC (diamond like carbon) coated steel or in gray steel. Apparently, there are a few color and size options.

This isn't the first time we've seen this implementation of smart features for traditional watches. Recently, we highlighted an Indiegogo campaign for the T-Band, which similarly adds smart functionality to a watch band.

It's hard to know whether this approach will take off, but watch makers are certainly hoping it will appeal to those who wish to hold onto their mechanical timepieces.
