The Playstation 3 (the successor to the Playstation 2) was released in Japan on November 11, 2006. The console was released in international markets in the following weeks. Canada and the US received the console on November 17 of the same year, while UK and Europe had to wait until March 23 of the following year. The Playstation 3 was the first gaming console to use a Blu-ray disc as its storage medium. Competing directly with the Nintendo Wii and the Xbox 360, the Playstation 3 is part of what’s known as the ‘seventh generation’ of video gaming consoles.
Since late 2013, the Playstation 3 has sold more than 80 million units, making it one of the best selling consoles of all time. The console is still popular among many, and Sony has designs on producing the unit up until 2015.
At launch, the Playstation 3 came to North America with 14 titles ready for game play. For many, the lack of game titles and expensive price tag was a massive problem. On top of that, many developers cited troubles developing for the console. However, through the years the PS3 has remained one of the most popular and most played consoles.
On August 18, 2009, Sony held a press conference to announce the launch of a ‘slim’ model. The PS3 CECH-2000 model featured a slimmed-down form factor. Besides that, the unit ran much quieter when powered on. The PS3 ‘slim’ was launched to major markets in September of 2009.
