Often referred to simply as ‘PS Vita’, the Playstation Vita is a handheld gaming console released by Sony in Japan and parts of Asia on December 17, 2011. The Vita came to Europe, North America, South America, and other parts of the world on February 22, 2012. Australia was the last to receive the Vita a day later, on February 23, 2012.
The Playstation Vita is part of the ‘eighth generation’ of gaming consoles (like the Playstation 4), and competes head-to-head with Nintendo’s ever popular 3DS.
Key specs on the Playstation Vita include a 5-inch OLED multi-touch capacitive touchscreen, Bluetooth, WiFi, ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore processor, LiveArea software UI, and quad-core SGX543MP GPU. An optional model with 3G connectivity is also available.
Sony also released a redesigned, slimmed down version of the Vita (the PCH-2000 series) in Japan in late 2013, and the UK and US in the first half of 2014. The PCH-2000 was roughly 20% thinner and lighter than the original unit, and included a micro USB port, and 1B of internal storage.
