On our last podcast we talked a bit about the direction watches are going. With the Gear 2 and Gear Fit due out soon, it will be interesting to see what style of watch people want going forward — the Gear style? The more curved display of the Fit? Something like the Pebble Steel? What about a classic watch design, much like the Cookoo and COGITO devices but with more functionality? One designer has a concept for such a watch that blends both classic style and futuristic smartwatch capabilities.
Gábor Balogh, a freelance designer from Hungary, came up with this concept for a timepiece that not only looks amazing, but also offers the functionality of the top smartwatches on the market. Based on Swedish watchmaker Triwa's Havana, this design has a styled mechanical watch backed with notifications from your phone — all controls by buttons and the bezel. There is no touchscreen, yet the buttons on the watch let you navigate as needed and there is also the ability to scroll using the watch bezel.
Icons appear for phone calls, email, SMS and the like and there are "apps" for monitoring your heart rate, navigation, stopwatch, weather, music and more. The watch would connect with your phone, but even without being connected still could be used as a normal watch.
It's doubtful that this concept will come to fruition anytime in the near future, but we can hope that big companies are taking notice and that somewhere down the road we'll see some gorgeous pieces like this one.
