Robot maker Sphero has confirmed it will make some kind of toy based on BB-8, the soccer ball-looking droid from the upcoming and highly anticipated film Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Sphero teased those plans earlier this month.
Sphero teamed up with Disney to create a real BB-8 droid for the movie itself. Today's announcement doesn't offer much in the way of details, such as a specific release date, price, or features, but it does hint that the BB-8 droid toy will be unlikely anything released to the general public. Sphero says:
This is the beginning of a revolution in the toy industry. Technology advancements have made it possible to build the toys of the future and create experiences that, until today, have only been portrayed in science fiction. Just think, people will be able to own a piece of the movie. They'll have it in their homes, and will be able to relive an experience that is authentic in every way to the entertainment on-screen. It's an exciting time, and we are thrilled you have chosen to be a part of this journey.
Sphero has already sold drones shaped like balls that can roll and be guided by a human with a smartphone app, It's likely that the BB-8 toy will be a much bigger advancement on that technology.
