Tesla's upcoming Roadster upgrade will increase its driving range to 400 miles
Tesla is upgrading its first electric car, the Roadster. Today, the company announced that a prototype Roadster 3.0 vehicle has been made with many improvements that should increase its driving range by up to 50% percent compared to the original.
Tesla says that the battery in the Roadster 3.0 has 31 percent more energy compared to the one in the first version of the car while still retaining its original size. Tesla has also improved the Roadster's drag coefficient with updated bodywork and its rolling resistance with new wheels and tires. It states:
Combining all of these improvements we can achieve a predicted 40-50% improvement on range between the original Roadster and Roadster 3.0. There is a set of speeds and driving conditions where we can confidently drive the Roadster 3.0 over 400 miles.
Tesla plans to show off Roadster 3.0 with a non-stop drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles sometime in early 2015.
