Xiaomi is venturing into the world of action cameras with the launch of the Yi Action Camera. Available for just 399 CNY ($64), the Yi Action Camera costs about half of an entry-level GoPro Hero ($130) and features much better hardware.
The entry-level GoPro Hero comes with a 5MP shooter that can record full-HD videos at 30fps and 720p at 60fps. Xiaomi is beating those numbers by offering a 16MP wide-angle camera sensor that can record 1080p at 60fps. The amount of on-board memory offered by the Yi Action Camera at 64GB is double that of the Hero, and its weight at 72g is also considerably lighter than the 110g of the GoPro Hero.
The action camera can work at a depth of 40m underwater, the same as the Hero. While the list of features on offer are enticing, Xiaomi does not provide a case for the camera as standard. There is an $80 travel edition that includes a handheld selfie stick. The standard accessories for the Yi Action Camera include a helmet mount as well as a harness that you can strap to your cat (Xiaomi clearly knows its target audience well).
The Yi Action Camera will go up for sale via a flash sales model in China, with no word yet on whether it will be in the list of products slated to launch in the US later this year.
