August announced that it is finally beginning to ship its smart lock. The Yves Behar-designed smart home accessory works with your existing dead bolt and an accompanying app on your phone to allow you to ditch your keys and enter and lock your home by using an app and the Bluetooth connectivity on your phone.
Shipments are beginning to go out at this time in limited quantities, and the company says that orders will be fulfilled over the next few months.
Essentially, how the August lock works is that you'll retain the keyed deadbolt portion of your existing lock on the outside, replacing the inside portion with the August attachment. The August attachment will house the battery and wireless connectivity to interact with the app on your phone to allow you to have keyless entry into your home.
And should the electronics not function or the batteries die, you can also go retro and use traditional keys to secure your home.
Originally available for pre-order at $199, new orders can be placed now for $249.99. The August smart lock will compete in the same space as Kwikset's Kevo, Lockitron, the Goji smart lock, and others.
Is the August lock something that you're interested in buying? Or are you waiting for the connected home market to settle a bit before trying to figure out how to outfit and connect your home?
