Amazon is now streaming certain TV series and movies from Amazon Prime Instant Video in 4K Ultra HD. Unlike Netflix, which limits 4K video to the $11.99 per month family plan, Amazon is not charging extra for 4K streaming.

Amazon is streaming original series like Alpha House and Transparent in Ultra HD, as well as BBC series Orphan Black. They have also lined up a number of Sony Pictures Entertainment movies, including Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Philadelphia, and Funny Girl. In addition, some Sony movies are available for purchase in 4K starting at $19.99.

Currently, Ultra HD streaming is limited to 4K smart TVs with Amazon's Instant Video app installed. Compatible brands include LG, Samsung, and Sony. More TVs are expected to have compatibility next year.
