The Pebble is a great addition to your favorite Android device and the possibilities with it are nearly endless. Out of the box you can get it to push notifications to your wrist, but it is capable of so much more. Luckily there has been a ton of progress from developers and there are a number of useful Android applications that help enhance the experience of the Pebble on Android.

Whether you are looking for new watch faces, applications or uses outside of just notifications there are plenty of options available. Let’s hit the break and take a look at some of the best options that you will want to get started with.

Pebble Connect

Pebble Connect

While Pebble Connect doesn’t allow you to create and install watch faces, or answer your phone calls, it does serve a very important purpose. In order for your Pebble to be able to communicate with the internet to update things like weather and calendar appointments it needs a connection. Meet Pebble Connect.

Allowing your Pebble and the internet to communicate easily Pebble Connect brings the added functionality that is required for a variety of apps and watch faces. If you want weather updates, or any additional information beyond just the time you will need this application. It is a free download from Google Play, and definitely one of the first things (besides the official Pebble app) that everyone should download.

Canvas for Pebble

Canvas for Pebble

One of the great features of the Pebble smart watch is that there are so many different watch faces available to be downloaded. Whether you want to have weather information, custom clocks or notification counts there are a bunch of great options available. Sometimes the setups that are available aren’t quite what you’re looking for, and that’s where Canvas for Pebble comes in.

Canvas for Pebble allows you to quickly and easily set up custom watch faces right from your Android smartphone and push them to the Pebble with ease. The application offers a variety of setup options that can be tweaked to your liking, along with the ability to create your own from a blank canvas.

Whether you want to have the time, upcoming appointments, unread notification counts, weather or any other combination, you can easily create a watch face for yourself. The application allows you to change the font size, background color, screen position and much more to give you a truly unique face. Canvas for Pebble is a great place to get started with custom watch faces and being free it allows everyone to take part in the fun.

Pebble Locker

Pebble Locker

Developers are realizing that the Pebble uses go way beyond just displaying notifications and Pebble Locker is a great example of that. This simple application allows your Pebble to become an authenticator, and when connected to your phone it will bypass the need to enter your passcode. If you disconnect the Pebble from your device or walk outside of the range of your phone, it will require the use of a passcode to be entered in order to unlock your device.

This small, yet extremely useful added security is something that many users will certainly enjoy. Personally I was never a fan of pass codes, mainly because entering it each time bothered me. Now I can use my Pebble to unlock the device for myself and if I happen to leave it unattended I know that it is still safe and secure, and will require others to use a passcode to gain entry. Pebble Locker is a free application and the additional security it provides makes it a must have for your Android device.

Pebble Notifier

Pebble Notifier

Out of the box Pebble supports notification from Gmail, Hangouts, SMS, incoming calls, calendar and a few others. While this is a great start for notifications there are still a bunch of applications that many use on a daily basis that they want notifications for. There are a slew of available applications that allow users to add support for more notifications and one of the ones I have found to work best so far is Pebble Notifier.

Setting up the application is really easy. Once you launch the app you have the option at the top to include the selected applications(if you want to pick and chose what to receive notifications for) or you can do the opposite and deselect the ones you don’t want notifications for.

The list that loads will show all the application packages on your device so you can then select what you wish to be notified of. After you have picked all the applications simply save the selection from the menu and the notifications will begin. Inside the menu settings you have the option to select whether you want to be notified of ongoing notifications, fetch detailed notifications, filter out notifications with certain text, and much more.

Having the advanced control of notifications and being able to select what you want to be notified about allows the Pebble to be just that much smarter. Pebble Notifier is a free download, and makes a great companion application for those who want more notifications.

Watch Trigger

Pebble Watch Trigger

Taking photos with our smartphones is a ton of fun, and as people continue to push the limits sometimes it take a bit of additional assistance to get just the right shot. Watch Trigger for Pebble allows you to take the picture from your wrist, instead of having to actually touch the device. Whether you want to set the device up to capture something from a little further away, or if you want to be included in the picture, this free app makes that so much easier.

Once you install the application it will ask you to install a watch app which will give you the interface. The take a picture it is very simple, all you have to do is open the Watch Trigger application and select whether you want to take a picture or video. Once you select an option it will then bring you to the viewfinder and this allows you to see on the device what you are capturing. Controlling from here is very simple, the up button adds time to the timer and the bottom button removes time from the timer. The center button will allow you to take the picture if you just want to take one without any timer.

If you want to be able to remotely take a picture on your mobile device with your Pebble this is definitely the app to have!

Pebble Apps

Pebble Apps

With tons of great watch faces and applications already available part of the struggle I have had is locating them to actually download them. Pebble has already announced that they will roll out their own app store in 2014, but that doesn’t help us right now. Pebble Apps is a great free application that rounds up a bunch of the apps and faces in one easy location and allows you to download them and install them with ease.

You can browse through more than 2700 watch faces, 50 different Google Play apps and nearly 100 accessories for your Pebble all from one easy location. The application gives user ratings for Google Play applications so you can easily see whether it is an app that others are enjoying or not without launching Google Play.

While it doesn’t give you access to every watch face or application that is available for the Pebble it does give you a bunch of them all in one place. This free application sure beats searching through hundreds of websites trying to locate a face that you want to use.

Keep in mind, this is just a small sampling of what is available through Google Play for your Pebble. There are a variety of applications that improve the functionality of the device, and developers are continuing to push the limits each day.

The best Pebble apps for Android

I am surprised you missed glance. With sdk 2 it gets even more useful.

The only other one for me is music boss, I find being able to raise and lower music volume very useful.

Those 2 apps are the only ones I had to have when I had my Pebble. Well, I had to have Notification Center for Pebble also. Those 3 are great apps.

Thank you very much,
Ordered my Pebble Steal and waiting eagerly for it to ship, mid February.
Do all these apps work on the forthcoming Pebble 2.0 Firmware?!

I can confirm that Canvas and Pebble Notifier work with firmware v2.0, and Watch Trigger says it supports 2.0 as well. Pebble Locker shouldn't require any specific firmware (it works by detecting your BlueTooth connection, as I understand it), and the same should go for Pebble Apps. See my other comment in regards to Pebble Connect, and there's a thread on the official Pebble forums entitled "HTTPebble with Pebble SDK 2.0?" that should give you further detail.

EDIT: My comment about Pebble Connect seems to have been deleted. I do not know why.

While not specifically a Pebble App, add Tasker to this list and you can grab data from it to put into your Canvas face, and can recreate the Pebble Locker App in Tasker with VERY minimal effort. Then you can add Pebble Tasker app to this list.

I love the concept of Pebble Locker, though my Moto X has a similar feature built in

I too am very surprised to see that Glance didn't make the cut here. It's extremely customizable and powerful. It's almost like having alternate app launcher for your Pebble.

Glance and the ability to send texts from the phone that it gives you are why I have a Pebble. I work in an ambulance ;it's very nice to be able to send "yes no on my way will call in five" without having to drag my phone off my belt.

I'm getting my Pebble tomorrow. These recommendations are very helpful. Can't wait to try them! :)

Pebble locker works on 2.0 and has been fixed to work with 4.4. It does have a small bug with other Bluetooth devices, but Wifi unlock works perfectly.

great post - can we have one for iphone please, I am waiting for my pebble steel to arrive and I am getting more and more excited each time I read great reviews like this!!

Pebble Notifier is a great app - probably the most useful of all. I wish Glance (or even the Pebble Connect app itself) would show the watch battery level. This is my main concern. Does 2.0 address this?

Just picked up my pebble today, can't wait to give all these apps a try!!

Man so, any great uses for the pebble that I'd never even thought of. I really need to get my hands on one soon. Though I suppose this list will change come next month once the official app store is available. With even more functionality available too.

Three days late but: today, PebbleCam arrived on Android It's comparable to Watch Trigger but streams your camera feed to the Pebble so it acts as a view finder and comes with features such as a stealth mode, self-timer or taking pictures with a snap!
