Hands-on with the Pebble Steel and new partner apps [video]

The Pebble Steel is the all new offering from the folks at Pebble, this time bringing a premium look and a premium price. Available in Black Matte and Brushed Stainless, the Pebble Steel will offer mostly the same features at the core of the original Pebble with some added goodies to boot.

Pebble Steel also has Gorilla Glass and an anti-fingerprint coating, a matching metal band as well as a black leather strap (for both variants), a new charging connector and a LED charge status indicator.

We got a chance to hang out with Pebble CEO Eric Migicovsky who showed us around the Pebble Steel a bit. It's a great little device if you're a Pebble fan and may even win own some prospective smartwatch buyers. It takes away the "cheapness" complaint many users had, dresses things up and isn't afraid to head out for a night on the town.

Eric says that the Pebble Steel came about because while the team was concentrating on getting devices out the door, their industrial designer had done his part and took on the new challenge. They knew people weren't wearing their Pebble out as much because of the appearance, so the Pebble Steel was born to give people another option that more closely resembles a traditional watch.

Pebble has also partnered up with Pandora, ESPN, foursquare and Mercedes and made some great apps that bring even more functionality to Pebble devices. Eric shows the apps here so we can see just how good the integration is across the board.

Foursquare and ESPN have me completely sold already.

This is why I love the Pebble more than any other smartwatch and hope to get one soon. You can really make it your own and use it however you want.

Very impressed! The new apps are quite nice. I'll have to check one of these out since Eric said it was smaller. That was one of my issues with the older version, it seemed quite large on the wrist. The Steel doesn't seem to be quite as big. The Black Matte is very sharp!

Now, if only there was an official BlackBerry app!

I've wanted one since they launched, but just wasn't really sold on the design. The steel series and the new 2.0 OS, plus some of the functionality of these news apps is stunning. I'm completely sold now, will be purchasing as soon as finances allow. I really never thought I'd want a watch again until they launched last year. Just can't wait to get my hands on one now. No other smartwatch around has even got me interested either, they've all seemed badly designed or tried to include too much unnecessary stuff, or non open proprietary software, especially the awful Samsung Galaxy Gear (IMHO, sure I'll get a fanboi flame here somewhere lol).

And of course these apps will work on our existing watches too right? And I only say that because I own an INpulse paperweight. ;)

Can we remove those preinstalled apps otherwise known as bloat to those of us who don't use them?
