LG reportedly lands deal to produce Apple's 'iWatch'

By Adam Zeis on 24 Jan 2014 11:23 am

In a rumor to beat all rumors, LG has reportedly landed a deal to manufacture Apple's iWatch. LG would produce a 1.52" flexible P-OLED display similar to that of the G-Flex. The device would be ready for the second half of 2014 with an initial run of 2 million units.

Take this for what it's worth of course. The news was originally reported by Korea's Digital Daily but has since been removed, though a cached version can be found here. We're not totally sold on the rumor but the idea of a curved, flexible screen for Apple's smartwatch is still very appealing.

So what do you think - is a curved watch the way to go for Apple? Sound off in the comments!

I wonder if that's why Samsung and LG both brought flex phones to the market. Proof on concept stuff. I wish LG would make a WebOS watch personally, but I know that's a pipe-dream.

Apple should stick to what they do best and not venture into the curved display realm for a smartwatch. The advantage to being a relative late - comer to the smartwatch party could they will learn from everyone else's mistakes - do hopefully just be fashionably late. Using ios on a miniature screen, even similar to that of their former ipad nano that had been formerly used as a makeshift smartwatch, would be the best avenue.
Apple should also stick with the metal finish they are now know for instead of going for the cheaper, yet price conscious, iPhone 5c look.

One thing is for sure, if apple did enter the smart watch game, they would make sure it was top quality. Flexible display would make sense. Consider some of the mock renders done by forum members of what an iwatch could look like. A lot of those concepts would need that curved glass technology. Interested to see if anything comes from this

A watch with a casing made of (or coated with) the self-healing polymer that the G-Flex is made of would make a lot of sense. Watches tend to take a lot of punishment.

I'd buy one, as long as it works with my Samsung phone.

I'm not really sold on an iWatch announcement yet, but then again I'm sure we'd have to wait until September or so to find out. By that time maybe things will change.

As for LG producing said watch, I'd really be surprised. They may provide the display, but Apple would design the watch itself (probably have it assembled by Foxconn)

Curved, yes, so that it fits the wrist better. Flexible, not sure I need that. But who ever knows what we need until Apple shows us we need it?
