Netflix European pricing frozen for 2 years for existing customers, rising for new accounts (updated)

Netflix is in the process of sending emails to its European (and now US) customers explaining its price increase for new subscriptions. More importantly for existing members, Netflix is committing to a 2 year freeze on any price increases, so for now at least it's a case of carry on as you are. The email in full reads as follows:

Update: we've been informed that Netflix is also rolling this deal out to the US too. Good times!

In order to continue adding more films and TV programmes, we are increasing our price from £5.99 to £6.99 for new members. As a thank you for being a member of Netflix already, we guarantee that your plan and price will not change for two years.

New subscribers will now – in the UK at least – be paying £1 more per month. The mainland Europe increase is €1 to €8.99 But even at £6.99 Netflix still offers incredibly good value for money. Would that extra £1 put you off signing up if you haven't already?

Yes I can confirm this applies to the US also as I got the email this morning also. :). Guess I'm in for at least another 2 years, although really what's another buck?

I wouldn't mind if they increase the price for Canadian Netflix, even to current customers as myself...... as long as they offer the same enormous amount of content from our neighbors below...

This is a pretty different approach then most companies take. Normally existing customer experience the price increases and new customer get special rates. Way to go Netflix, a company that understand loyalty goes a long way.

I got the email as well in the US! So glad that Netflix is taking care of its existing and loyal customer, even if it is only $1 a month! Not that that will break the bank or anything, but still nice!

I guess they have to make their money back for being extorted for priority access to the net.

Pricing hasn't changed in Mexico but, it'll only be a matter of time. Don't know about Europe, but at least over here, content is REALLY lacking even for the 9 bucks they charge already. Thankfully, VPN helps me get USA content, and then it's not so bad. If the price increase is only a buck, I wouldn't mind so much, but if it starts climbing and climbing, I might have to rethink having a subscription or sharing it with someone else.

Not that I want to pay more, but the value Netflix brings to my house is worth the extra dollar I don't have to pay for two years.

I really like and appreciate this plan from Netflix, keeping existing customers happy is a welcome change. Honestly, I find it to be a great value even at the increased price, but cheers for looking out for the guys that got you here Netflix!

I think one of the reasons Netflix has been so successful is because their monthly price is so accessible. In Canada we pay $7.99 a month (tax included). My husband and I both work out of the home and have unlimited downloads which makes Netflix the go to viewing pleasure. I can't see us cancelling the service for a one dollar increase but it just goes to show that even with more and more people using it they can still be part of the global increase of cost...

I received the US email this morning. US rates are increasing from $7.99/mo to $8.99/mo for new members.

I just want to think that extra buck isn't going directly to Comcast and Verizon.

I'm glad they are giving a freeze to us and I understand that these content deals are expensive but I just hope we don't see streaming providers try and pull what the cable providers did and slowly continue to raise the price of getting our content.

Honestly, given the level of content available for such a low price, I have no problems paying an extra dollar a month for Netflix.

Considering the cost of cable that doesn't give me half of what I want, at least Netflix gives me some good back libraries to watch again. I'm still satisfied, but they really need to develop a new series for science fiction fans

I'm from Brazil and just got the email about the price increase. But in my case they are freezing the price for only one year for existing costumers :/

The UK content is not that great by comparison to the US. I think at its original price it was questionable as to whether it was worth it when compared to Sky TVs offerings. Netflix in the UK is a bit like browsing your local video store in the 80's.
